A few answers to help you take the first step.
Ask Aya your questionDo I need an FBAR if I live in Saudi Arabia?
Living in Saudi Arabia does not, by itself, remove the requirement. US persons generally need an FBAR if they have a financial interest in, or signature authority over, reportable foreign financial accounts whose combined value exceeds $10,000 at any time in the calendar year. Exceptions can apply.
What if I’ve never filed an FBAR?
Start with a review of your circumstances. The appropriate route depends on the missing years, whether income and tax were correctly reported, and whether the IRS has contacted you. Catch-up options have specific conditions; penalty relief is not automatic.
Is an FBAR the same as a US tax return?
No. The FBAR is FinCEN Form 114, a foreign account report filed with FinCEN. Your federal income tax return is filed with the IRS. Filing one does not replace the other, and additional foreign asset reporting may also be required.
Can I catch up through the Streamlined procedure?
Potentially. The Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures are for eligible taxpayers who meet the non-residency requirements and can certify non-willful conduct. They generally involve three years of tax returns and six years of FBARs. Tax and interest remain payable. We assess eligibility before recommending this route.
Can we handle everything in Arabic?
Yes. Aya speaks Arabic and English, so you can discuss your situation and receive explanations in Arabic. Official US forms and submissions are prepared in English where required.
